Reflection
The International Scholars Program has given me the tools and opportunities to apply a global lens to my coursework and campus involvement. It is exciting to reflect on how I have changed since I started at the University of Florida as a freshman. Prior to coming to UF I knew that it was my goal to travel abroad but I did not know how I was going to make my dream a reality. I also knew that I was proud of my ecuadorian heritage but I didn’t know what a strength or asset it would be to my coursework and peer collaboration.
As a sophomore I was looking for more ways to become involved at UF and get involved globally. Getting involved globally was a challenge because it was the middle of the pandemic, but the international scholars program allowed me to see and learn about the world without even leaving Gainesville. I did this by engaging in international coursework such as ANT3478: Global Health Culture, DAA2331: West African Dance, and ANT2410: Cultural Anthropology. Engaging in these courses allowed me to study cultural nuances and to be able to celebrate other cultures as well as my own. I was also able to develop professional development skills such as teamwork, organization, critical thinking, and public speaking. In fact, taking these courses inspired me to pursue a minor in anthropology to further study humanity and human behavior, in both the past and present.
As I progressed throughout my schooling and places began opening back up after COVID-19, the International Scholars Program helped me research potential study abroad programs. I was unsure of where I wanted to go or what type of program I wanted to pursue, so initially all the choices were very overwhelming. Once I decided I was going to pursue the University of South Carolina’s Public Health study abroad program in Costa Rica, the UF International Center and International Scholars program helped me prepare for this program. From packing to money exchange to understanding cultural nuances, the International Scholars Program helped me prepare to travel abroad so I could enjoy my studies and enjoy being in Costa Rica.
In addition, one of my favorite parts of my intercultural experiences is definitely forming life-long memories and relationships with individuals from different cultures, backgrounds, and beliefs. Serving as a general body member and the Membership and Matching Director for UF Navigators gave me the opportunity to interact with individuals from different cultures and to help me develop professional development skills such as organization and communication.
As a senior, I have often found myself reflecting on my time at the University of Florida and the lessons I have learned as a member of the International Scholars program. I can confidently say that my college experience has been enriched by my global experiences and from being part of the International Scholars Program. Going into college I had several dreams and goals relating to travel, but I did not know how to turn my dreams into reality. Therefore, I want to challenge others to take steps towards their goals and to lean on the fantastic advisors of the International Scholars program who will help them achieve their dreams.
Working on this EPortfolio has allowed me to consolidate and express my global experiences into an easily shareable format. Thank you for reading about my experiences. I wish you all luck on your journeys!
